The Hole in the Wall
The Hole in the Wall has earned a reputation as a world famous dive bar. Consistently rated as one of the friendliest neighborhood bars in San Diego, it takes a little effort to find us, and that’s just how we like it. A nondescript entrance makes you question if you’re in the right place and when you step down in to a cool classic tropical patio, you know you are.
Previously dubbed the “19th Hole” due to its proximity to the Sail Ho Golf Club, the bar sits in a depression dug in the early 1900’s to access an aqueduct that ran between Mission Bay (then called False Bay) and San Diego Bay. A speakeasy during Prohibition, with a chicken shack next door and green lawn for picnicking, this off-beat location became a safe space for San Diego’s gay community in the 1940’s. We honor this important history as the home of San Diego’s original Sunday Funday. With rotating food trucks, you have to get there early to guarantee entrance.
Throughout the week, we have become a bar with no label, a space for people looking for something a little less ordinary. We are an important venue for original singer-songwriters, our karaoke crowd can’t be beat, and our monthly trivia is handcrafted and hosted by a local expert. Our atmosphere is all about fun and enjoying the simple things with a pool table, beer pong tournaments, and karaoke, outdoor fire pits surrounded by the largest outdoor smoking patio in San Diego, we make sure you are never at a loss to find someone to interact with, or a place to sit undisturbed. You’ll always get a good drink at a good price.
What truly makes us great are our patrons. We sponsor a number of local sports teams who join us monthly for our special Saturday Bingo fundraising with door prizes.
With over a dozen different beers on tap featuring local breweries as well as our own house specialty cocktails, The Hole in the Wall is a dive bar that’s well worth searching out. Come on by and have a drink with us.
