Supreme Court Ruling and the LGBTQIA Community

On June 30, 2023, the Supreme Court Ruled that a company, in this case 303 Creative, can deny services to people because of who they are and because it goes against there religion. This ruling will affect not only the LGBTQIA community, but any group that is not worthy of another’s religion. Religious freedom is extremely important in our lives, however, when that freedom takes away rights and services from someone else, then the Human Right should prevail.

This is so much bigger than a web design company – who cares about her business. But this potentially (and probably) will lead to bigger issues when it comes to healthcare, life saving procedures, safety, grocery shopping, hairdressers – the list goes on. Imagine if this lovely, god-fearing woman owned a ambulance service or a pharmaceutical company – she would have the right to refuse someone services based on her religion.

We are suppose to be a country that separates church and state while protecting religious rights and freedoms – this is an amazing structure that our forefathers built, protecting each individual’s ideas even though law should not be based on them. However this freedom to exercise a religion, should not take away someone’s right to be treated the same as someone.

Where do we go from here? The Supreme Court is the ‘highest court in the land’ with a life time appointment. We can’t vote them out when we don’t agree with their interpretation of law. But what we can do as a community, is use our wallets. Money is power (and the root of all evil :). Choose which businesses you will support and share this info with your husbands, wives, kids, etc. If a company refuses service, publicize it and refuse to give them power (i.e. money). To inform the LGBTQIA community we create a new site to list these businesses. Gay UNFriendly Businesses.
