Intersex Pride Flag
Intersex refers to individuals born with differences or developed differently than the two ways human bodies developed. Created by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights of Australia, the circle symbolizes wholeness and completeness. The colors of the flag were used to avoid any symbols or references to gender.
Bear Pride Flag
Bears, in gay culture, are usually older, larger, hairier men that focus on masculinity. Cubs refer to younger men with similar characteristics. Created by Craig Byrnes in 1995 for an undergraduate project about the Bear culture. The colors represent the furs of bears throughout the world.
Leather Pride Flag
Designed by Tony DeBlase of Chicago, the flag first appeared at International Mister Leather in 1989 to represent those in the BDSM and Leather “sub-cultures”. Mr. DeBlase doesn’t give any insight to the meanings of the colors and will leave it up to each individual. Additionally the Hanky Code was another identifier of a person’s sexual interest and roles, although this practice is not as common as it once was.
Many other flags exists for the diversity in our community. Although there are many different flags the represent the many different facets of who we are, we are all in this together whether you are lesbian, transgender, straight, gay, non-binary or a combination of them all! I hope this helps you the next time you are at an event and see one of these wonderful colorful flags!
